A Quiet Place: Day One
The City That Never Sleeps, Goes Quiet
By: Connor N. F. Field
A Quiet Place: Day One, a prequel to The Quiet Place series with a simple twist, it takes place in the noisiest city in the world. Ever since the first one, this has been one of my biggest curiosities on what it would look like, and after having seen it, it has left me with a bit more questions than answers. To sum up my experience with this film, I found it a bit underwhelming.
The trailer created some false pretenses for the audience, making the exposition drag on a lot longer than it should have. The story feels formulaic to the first film of the franchise and has a plot as thick as a silk string. While technically amazing, especially sound design, the story missed some beats. There were holes left in some of the plot, and I have the benefit of a doubt they will be covered up in the future.
Day One was set up so well to see some chaos through the ambient roar of New York City, but an R rating would have gave room for them to explore what it could have been like in this setting. Instead what we got feels like a cop out of violence to accompany a broader audience.
All-in-all, I think the PG-13 rating trapped the filmmakers from fully discovering what would have happened in this environment, something that could have been beautifully set up. Day One did not live up to the expectations set by its predecessors (I think that's what I would call them in this situation).
Amazing
