Napoleon
Pardon my [lack of] French
Napoleon (2023) failed to meet expectations, and I think its downfall came from its ill attempt to genre mix. They seemed to try to appeal to too many demographics and fell short of it. Which is weird to say because it’s historical events. I just think they tried to show too much of different aspects of Napoleon’s life when they could’ve hit a singular demographic really hard if they focused on one.
The cinematography is about what you expected from it. There was a lot of focus on the shots and the lighting composition. There were some extremely excellent shots throughout the film.
I think they looked at a time line of Napoleon and decided to cut out some bits to show the “more important stuff” without much regard to how it would actually affect the quality of the film. The pacing was just inconsistent. The jumps in time were long at some points and short at others, and it felt like the audience was expected to fill some of the gaps.
The audio and sound mixing weren’t all that great, however the score, especially in the battle scenes, were outstanding. The costume design department needs to be paid more for the insane amount of costumes they made and the attention to detail of them.
Overall, Napoleon (2023) was rather disappointing and I would contribute it mostly due to its attempt to blend too many genres together and accommodate too many audiences.
